When the Fix Became the Next Bug

One of the patterns I ran into pretty quickly with AI coding work was this:

I'd ask for a fix, and the answer would come back as a series of patch instructions.

Change this block. Replace that function. Insert this helper. Add this import. Move this code.

On paper, that sounds efficient. And sometimes it is.

But over time I noticed something. A surprising number of the problems I was dealing with were no longer just the original bug. They were problems created by the process of applying the fix.

Not always because the AI's idea was completely wrong. Sometimes the problem was that I had to manually stitch the answer into the code, and that stitching process introduced its own failure points.

That was especially true in larger files, unfamiliar languages, or projects where several sections of code looked close enough alike that it was easy to drop the new code into the wrong place. And if the language wasn't one I worked in every day, that raised the odds even more. It's a lot easier to make a bad call when you don't instantly recognize the shape of the code around you, and one wrong insertion can create a whole new wave of errors that weren't there before.

At that point, I wasn't just debugging the software anymore. I was debugging the repair.

That's when I started thinking of it as the patch trap.

The trap isn't that patches never work. The trap is that they look safer than they really are.

A short response in the chat window gives you the feeling that the change itself is small and controlled. But the risk hasn't disappeared. It has just moved.

It moved to the point where a human being, often tired, often juggling context, and sometimes working in code that isn't their primary language, is now acting as the merge engine.

That's where things go sideways.

I had enough of those moments that I changed the workflow.

Instead of asking for a list of edits, I started asking for full file replacements. Later, in bigger projects, I started working from repo snapshots and having the AI return updated artifacts in a structure that dropped back into the project cleanly.

That didn't make AI perfect. It didn't eliminate mistakes. But it changed the nature of the mistakes.

Now, when something was wrong, I was much more likely to be dealing with a bad artifact than with a bad artifact plus a bad manual insertion plus a bad guess about whether I'd placed everything correctly.

That was a huge improvement.

It also made rollback easier. It made testing clearer. And it gave me a better sense of what I was actually running at any given point in the conversation.

That's the part people don't always talk about when they talk about AI coding. The question isn't just whether the model can suggest a fix. The question is whether your workflow gives that fix a safe path into the project.

If it doesn't, then sooner or later the fix becomes the next bug.

That doesn't mean patch instructions have no place. Sometimes they're exactly the right tool. But I don't treat them as the default anymore.

For work that matters, I'd much rather deal with a clean artifact than a set of conversational repair instructions.

Because once you've lived through enough "just replace these few lines" moments, you start to realize that small-looking changes can carry a very large blast radius.

And that's a lesson I learned the hard way.
